Treatment of pelvic floor reeducation or perineum
Physiotherapist Isabel Ramos de Almeida
The perineum, also called pelvic floor, consists of a set of muscles and ligaments located at the bottom of the basin, between the pubic bone, the sacrum and the coccyx. As the name suggests, is like the floor of the basin / pelvis.
The pelvic floor muscles (PFM) have the function of supporting the pelvic organs - uterus, bladder and rectum - and help in maintaining continence, since they have the function to close the urethra (the canal that carries urine to the outside environment), vagina and anus. The perineum is also the structure responsible for the blood supply to the genitals, and is therefore entirely related to male and female sexual satisfaction.
Urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, prolapses (falling bodies) , constipation, postural changes, pelvic pain or sexual dysfunction are some problems whose origin is due to anatomical changes of the pelvis and the weakening of these muscles.
Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles is one of the recommended measures to accelerate the recovery of continence and is achieved with the physical therapy.
The treatments consist of the increase in body perception and awareness of the pelvic floor muscles by teaching the user about their condition, changes in attitudes and lifestyle and by performing strength works the same muscles. Thus, the rehabilitation works in promoting prevention; treatment and recovery, enhancing the function of the pelvic floor and the control of bladder function and may prevent or delay surgical intervention. Also acts around the body, involving posture, breathing and body awareness.
These treatments are suitable for all kind of women, at any age and / or time in their life, from pregnancy ( pre and post-childbirth ) to menopause and post pelvic surgery .
These treatments are also suitable for men who have undergone prostatectomy and situations of muscle weakening.
The treatment is performed by a specialist physiotherapist that works in this area. |
