It is a surgical specialty concerned with the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the urinary tract in both sexes, and the genital tract in the male.
It covers a wide range of fields:
- endourology –endoscopic surgery that can be used to operate on the prostate and other tumours or to remove calculi without the need for an open surgery;
- oncologic surgery – surgical treatment of genital and urinary tract neoplasms such as prostate cancer, bladder and kidney, testicles and penis;
- urodynamic tests and urinary incontinence;
- andrology, a branch dedicated to the male genital tract, focus on male infertility, erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems. This branch works closely with endocrinology.
